The City of Johannesburg’s emergency service team has confirmed another “hijacked” building has caught fire.
The emergency management service responded to the incident in Delvers Close in Marshalltown on Friday morning.
Khumalo confirmed that the building that caught fire was one of the hijacking buildings in the city.
There has been a wave of hijacked buildings – there are believed to be up to 500 in the city.
Spokesperson Xolile Khumalo said the fire started on the ground floor where residents had built shacks. “Everybody has been evaluated and no injuries have been reported so far,” said Khumalo.
This is one of the many fire incidents the city has had to deal with in recent weeks.
Last month, 76 people died after a three-storey building caught fire in Marshalltown. The cause of that fire is not yet known as authorities are still investigating.
On the same day (Friday), the EMS also responded to another fatal incident where an abandoned building in Orange Farm collapsed killing one person and another one injured.
