Zambia’s constitutional court ruled has ruled that former President Edgar Lungu is ineligible to run for another term in office after he announced his return to active politics last year. Edgar Chagwa Lungu served as the sixth president of Zambia from 26 January 2015 to 24 August 2021.
Today’s Judgement by Zambian Con-court, Edgar Lungu has been blocked for contesting in-the next 2026 elections. This effectively reverse the last judgement that had allowed him to contest in the last election.
The Constitutional Court ruled today that Lungu already served his first term when he succeeded late President Michael Sata in 2015. Lungu served for a year after winning a presidential by-election that year against Hakainde Hichilema.
Elections were then held in 2016, and Lungu again defeated Hichilema. He then lost to Hichilema in 2021. After Lungu announced a plan to run against Hichilema in 2026, a citizen went to court to have him barred.
Lungu’s comeback followed the arrest of several family members, including his wife, on allegations of possessing the proceeds of crime.
