Gilbert Mufandaedza, a 27-year-old resident of Jenya farm in Karoi, appeared in the Karoi Magistrates’ Court facing serious charges of bribery.
The incident occurred on October 12, 2024, around 1:30 PM, when a police officer, while on duty, spotted an unregistered motorcycle owned by Kennedy Chirongoma.
This led to the immediate arrest of Chirongoma for not adhering to registration laws for motor vehicles.
In a bid to secure the release of his neighbor, who had been apprehended for the same offense, Mufandaedza attempted to bribe the police officer with a $5 bill.
Unfortunately for him, the officer had already documented the serial number of the bill before accepting it.
Realizing he was caught, Mufandaedza was swiftly apprehended for offering the bribe, and the police launched an investigation into his actions.
During the court proceedings, evidence was presented that showcased Mufandaedza’s intentions to undermine law enforcement and evade compliance with the registration regulations.
Ultimately, the court found him guilty of bribery, leading to a sentence of six months in prison.
However, the judge displayed some leniency, suspending three months of the sentence for five years, contingent upon good behavior.
Furthermore, the court mandated that Mufandaedza complete 105 hours of community service as part of his punishment.
The ruling aims to deter similar conduct among community members and reinforces the principle that attempting to subvert the law through bribery will not be tolerated.
