There is cliché that politics is a dirty game.
They say so for the simple reason that it’s a game that has no rules. There are no ethics, standards or set principles that guide politics, even though there are laws which may govern some aspects of it.
The political terrain is rugged,
a cutthroat battlefield where contestants ride roughshod over each other and sometimes just defame each other with reckless abandon, often without serious consequences.
The ultimate prize for many except a rare breed is self-interest: power and money.
Social media has exacerbated the situation by providing the platform for engagement, including nasty criticism and attacks, as well as character assassination.
Hence only the skinned survive.
But then again it can’t be blank cheque.
That is why Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities Daniel Garwe’s nasty remarks in this video about a political opponent Saviour Kasukuwere, an independent presidential election candidate, have raised debate.
People are asking and debating whether or not this is appropriate?
Shouldn’t politicians, especially election candidates, be focusing on public policy issues, social service delivery and economic priorities as well as solutions to problems rather than damaging rivals’ reputations and credibility?
