According to Reuters witnesses, police in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, used tear gas to scatter demonstrators who were protesting Monday against what they claim is a wave of mysterious kidn@ppings of government critics.
Human rights organizations claim that dozens of Kenyans have been kidn@pped in recent months and blame the illegal arrests on Kenya’s intelligence and police forces.
According to footage aired by the NTV station, some groups of teenage protestors marched through downtown Nairobi, while others held a sit-in and yelled anti-government slogans. Some of the demonstrators held signs condemning arbitrary detentions.
The national police spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday’s protests.
The alleged abductions followed anti-government protests that started in June this year.
Initially aimed at overturning proposed tax hikes, the demonstrations eventually evolved into a movement that cut across Kenya’s traditional ethnic divisions, becoming the biggest threat to the incumbent President William Ruto’s government.
