Health experts at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo have expressed grave concerns over the alarming increase in patients succumbing to kidney failure due to a severe shortage of medical supplies.
The hospital, which is one of the largest and most reputable medical facilities in the country, has been struggling to provide adequate care to patients with kidney-related complications.
According to hospital officials, the shortage of essential medical supplies has been exacerbated by a combination of factors, including economic challenges, supply chain disruptions, and a lack of investment in the country’s healthcare sector.
As a result, patients with kidney failure are being forced to wait for extended periods of time for treatment, leading to increased mortality rates. The hospital’s nephrology department has been particularly hard hit, with doctors reporting a significant increase in the number of patients presenting with severe kidney disease.
“It’s a crisis,” said Dr. Khethokuhle Moyo, a nephrologist at Mpilo Central Hospital. “We’re seeing patients who are in dire need of dialysis or other life-saving treatments, but we simply don’t have the necessary supplies to provide them with the care they need. It’s heartbreaking to see patients suffering and dying because of our lack of resources.”
The hospital’s director confirmed that the shortage of medical supplies is a major concern for the hospital. “We’re doing everything we can to address the issue, but it’s a complex problem that requires a sustained effort to resolve,” he said. “We’re working with government agencies and other stakeholders to try to secure additional funding and resources, but it’s taking longer than we would like.”
In the meantime, health experts are urging patients with kidney-related complications to seek medical attention immediately if they are experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, swelling, or decreased urine output.
