On September 2 2024 , a serious traffic accident unfolded in Kariba when a commuter omnibus, transporting 18 passengers from Heights to Nyamhunga, lost control and crashed, injur!ng four individuals.
The vehicle veered off the road while descending a steep slope, careening into an electric pole before ultimately landing on its roof.
Acting police commanding officer for the Kariba district, Superintendent Saul Mhanqwa, confirmed that the !njured passengers were promptly taken to Kariba District Hospital for treatment and, fortunately, were later discharged.
Mhanqwa emphasized the importance of driver caution when navigating the steep slopes and sharp curves that characterise the resort town, highlighting that recent statistics indicate human error as the primary cause of road accidents in Zimbabwe.
The sobering statistics reflect a national crisis , the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe reported 38,482 road accidents from January to September 2023, resulting in a staggering 1,545 d3aths and 7,294 inj_ries.
This alarming rate translates to an average of 141 road accidents per day, with a disturbing trend of increased incidents occurring during weekend nights and holidays, particularly over festive seasons.
Reckless driving, the use of substandard vehicles, speeding, and driving under the influence of dr_gs have been identified as the primary culprits behind these accidents.
The police are urging drivers to adhere to safety regulations and exercise greater responsibility on the roads to prevent unnecessary loss of life.
