Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Jonasi, who recently won a Golden Buzzer on America’s Got Talent, is now facing criticism for allegedly degrading his country.
During the show, Jonasi shared anecdotes about life in his village in Chimanimani, Zimbabwe, highlighting challenges such as poor network connectivity, where people have to climb mountains to make calls, and the excitement over the installation of traffic lights in villages.
However, users on X have criticized him, accusing him of degrading Zimbabwe. Some have expressed that they do not find his jokes funny.

Here Reads the Comments:
“He makes jokes by degrading his own country…..we don’t do horse riding in Zim and we are not a village”
“I personally do not hate him, but I struggle to put people on a pedestal just because they are Zimbabweans. In that clip, he wasn’t sounding natural, maybe it was nerves. Really felt like people were like laughing in sympathy rather than at the humour.”

“I think people don’t like the idea of being characterized as extremely poor, moreso considering the already existing stereotypes around Zimbabwean/African people. It would seem that the jokes furthers that view, hence the reactions.”
“But if we don’t find his jokes funny is it hate? This guy thrives on mocking Zim, perpetuating stereotypes about Africa. That’s not funny at all.”

“The remarks made were not humorous anecdotes, but rather nonsensical utterances stemming from an overly enthusiastic immigrant’s attempt to make a favorable impression on his hosts.”
“Not finding him funny as a comedian is not hating him. If you have a low bar for great comedy, don’t make everyone’s problem Don’t blackmail us for the simple reason that he is Zimbabwean When he kills it, we will support it without blackmail”
“I don’t knw, I find his jokes dry….not hating or anything!”
