Justice, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi has explained that the main change introduced by the The 2022 Marriage Act as the minimum age of marriage set at 18 years after it has sparked misinformation on social media.
Minister Ziyambi emphasized that recent social media posts about the new Marriages Act are misleading and intended to cause confusion among the public.

The new law combines previous separate laws for civil and customary marriages into one comprehensive framework.
He clarified that the Act does not change the existing requirements for valid civil or registered customary marriages, except for banning child marriages.
This change aligns marriage laws with the Constitution, which states that the minimum marriage age is 18.
Additionally, Minister Ziyambi noted that the practice of paying roora (or lobola) remains a requirement for customary marriages.
