A traditional healer in Lusaka, Isaac Mtonga, has found himself in a bitter marital dispute despite peddling concoctions promising love and virility.
Mtonga’s wife, Abigail Muleya, dragged him to court for failing to provide financial support, despite his lucrative business selling fertility and virility potions.
Muleya, who sued for marriage reconciliation, testified that Mtonga had never bought her clothes or provided for their child since birth.
She alleged that he only spends money on himself, abandoning her when he runs out of cash. Mtonga claimed he was unaware of the cost of his wife’s underwear or their daughter’s dresses.
The court was unimpressed by Mtonga’s defense, with Magistrate Lewis Mumba urging him to prioritise his family and show respect to his wife.
The magistrate noted that, as a traditional healer, Mtonga should be setting an example in his own marriage.
The couple was reconciled, but Mtonga was warned to take up his responsibilities as a husband and show respect to his wife. It seems that Mtonga’s love potions may need to start at home.
