In a chilling case unfolding at Chief Makope’s traditional court in Zambara Village, Chiweshe, religious leader Madzibaba Ekedi Mawodzwa from Kuwadzana, Harare, stands accused of leading a horrific k!lling spree that claimed the lives of eleven of his relatives.
The grisly details of the case have shocked the community and brought a dark spotlight on Madzibaba Ekedi’s shrine.
Madzibaba Ekedi, accused of seeking absolute spiritual power, is alleged to have orchestrated the m_rders with the help of seven lieutenants.
The most disturbing accusation involves the brut@l k!lling and mutilation of his nephew.
According to court testimonies, the gang tied up Madzibaba’s nephew at the shrine, cut off a portion of his buttocks, collected his blood in a bottle, and performed r!tuals with it. Despite the horrifying nature of these claims, Madzibaba Ekedi maintains his innocence, insisting he was merely trying to help his sick nephew.
“I did not k!ll him,” he stated. “I was helping him to get better because he was sick.”

The case took a supernatural turn when the spirit of the murdered nephew reportedly possessed a family member, demanding the return of the blood that had been spilled. The haunting presence was said to repeatedly declare, “My spirit is not at rest, I want my blood back.”
Testimonies from the possessed family member painted a gruesome picture of the events leading to the nephew’s de@th. “He tied me and forced me to drink some juju from a bottle,” the spirit claimed through the possessed relative, adding weight to the accusations against Madzibaba Ekedi.
Seeking resolution, the Mawodzwa family approached Madzibaba Cloud Chifamba, another religious figure, who advised that the matter could only be resolved in the presence of a chief. Following this advice, the family consulted a local sangoma who ultimately referred them to Chief Makope.
The traditional court, initially handling the case, took a dramatic turn when Chief Makope ruled that the police should be involved due to the nature of the accusations. This decision prompted Madzibaba Ekedi and his associates to go into hiding.
