A 27-year-old man from Harare appeared in court on Monday regarding a m_rder case from 2021.
Elton Pardon was remanded in custody until June 4 by Magistrate Dennis Mangosi.
Prosecutor Thomas Chanakira informed the court that on May 22, 2021, Pardon, along with his alleged accomplices (one of whom is already in custody for the same charge), assaulted Tinotenda Mandiyanike, accusing him of stealing seven pairs of jeans trousers and US$400 cash belonging to Masimba Makoto.
It is alleged that the accused covered Mandiyanike’s mouth to prevent him from seeking help and repeatedly beat him with electric cables, car jumpers, and fists.
They also purportedly searched his home for the stolen property to no avail.
Upon realising Mandiyanike was struggling to bre@the due to the be@tings, they allegedly transported him to a medical facility in Ruwa, falsely claiming they had rescued him from a crowd @ccusing him of theft.
However, the medical facility refused admission as Mandiyanike was already dece@sed. The @ccused then purportedly placed the b0dy in their vehicle and drove toward Norton, dumping it at the 62-kilometer peg along Harare – Bulawayo Highway.
The b0dy was discovered by a motorist, who subsequently reported the incident to ZRP Norton Traffic.
Makoto was arrested on August 11, 2021, and implicated Pardon in the crime.
