Magistrate Joshua Nembaware emphasized the importance of peacefully resolving conflicts as he sentenced 35-year-old Lesson Moyo from Plumtree.
Moyo was fined $200 for assault and ordered to complete 210 hours of community service for malicious damage to property.
The case stemmed from an incident that occurred early last month when Moyo visited a local woman to propose a r0mantic relationship.
When she rejected his pr0p0sal, Moyo became enraged and accused her of having too much pride.
In a fit of anger, he grabbed a 20-litre tin full of oil and struck the woman, also damaging some of her belongings.
