A 22-year-old man Trymore Mbengo from Mudziwepasi Village, Chief Serima, Gutu, was brought before the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court facing charges of attempted m_rder.
The incident occurred on October 8, 2024, in the early hours around 3 a.m. during a heated argument with his female companion at a residence in Dulibadzimu, Beitbridge.
In a fit of anger, Mbengo brandished an okapi knife and allegedly st_bbed the complainant in the left side of her chest, causing her to collapse on the floor.
The gravity of the situation escalated as nearby eyewitnesses rushed to the scene upon hearing the commotion.
They swiftly intervened, apprehending Mbengo as he attempted to flee, resulting in a citizens’ arrest that showcased the community’s commitment to safety.
The complainant received immediate medical attention, emphasizing the critical need for swift action in such alarming situations.
During the court proceedings, the evidence presented was compelling, leading to a conviction for attempted m_rder.
The magistrate handed down a sentence of four years, but with a significant portion of 30 months suspended for five years, allowing for a sliver of hope for rehabilitation.
Ultimately, Mbengo will serve an effective 18 months in prison, a consequence that reflects the serious nature of his actions.
