Police in Bududa District have arrested a man who allegedly k!lled his girlfriend over incest on Saturday.
Stephen Wakubona, a resident of Buimbiyi North village, Bukhaukha Parish, Buzeiko Sub-County, is accused of k!lling his girlfriend, Betty Tsemoyi, 19, a mother of one, during a fight that erupted after a misunderstanding between the two.
According to a neighbour who wished to remain anonymous, Wakubona accused Tsemoyi of leaving him, which led to a brief quarrel that escalated into vi0lence.
“Our preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect k!lled his girlfriend after she decided to leave him upon discovering that they were related. Despite their relationship resulting in a child, their parents did not approve of their union due to their familial ties,” Mr Taitika told Monitor on Sunday.
He added that Tsemoyi had gone to collect her clothes from Wakubona’s home after informing her parents of her decision. She was not seen again until late in the day when news spread that she had been k!lled and buried in a banana plantation on the suspect’s father’s property.
“Our officers from Bududa Central Police Station visited the crime scene to gather evidence, and the body was exhumed from the banana plantation,” he said.
According to Mr Taitika, the deceased was found with a deep cut on her neck, indicating that the suspect used a panga to k!ll her.
The suspect, who is currently detained at Maluku Police Station in Mbale City, was arrested while attempting to flee the crime scene.
In the aftermath of the incident, relatives and residents of the deceased attacked and destroyed the suspect’s property.
“Several houses, banana plantations, and other properties belonging to the suspect, as well as neighboring houses, were burned down,” he said.
The body of the deceased has been transported to Bududa Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy to aid further investigation.
