Bright Maturura, a 34-year-old man, was brought before the Nyanga Magistrates’ Court for unlawfully diverting electricity to his tuckshop, contravening the Electricity Act (Chapter 13:19).
The incident occurred in July 2020 when Maturura illicitly connected a power cable directly from the electricity grid to his business located at Matema Business Centre in Nyanga.
After an investigation, ZESA employees discovered the illegal connection on December 14, 2023, leading to his apprehension.
His actions not only violated legal standards but also caused significant financial prejudice to ZESA, amounting to US$8,712, highlighting the serious consequences of energy theft.
The court, noting the severity of the crime but also considering the potential for rehabilitation, ultimately sentenced Maturura to 12 months imprisonment.
However, the sentence was wholly suspended on the condition that he performs 420 hours of community service at Matema Primary School.
This resolution aims to hold him accountable while allowing him to contribute positively to his community.
