William Gonese, a 28-year-old shift manager at a fast-food outlet in Harare, has found himself in legal trouble after allegedly stealing US$3,420 from his workplace.
The funds were reportedly squandered on an online betting platform known as Aviator, or “Kandege” in local slang.
Gonese appeared before Harare magistrate Lynne Chinzou, where he pleaded guilty to theft charges.

The case’s complainant is Simbisa Baker’s Inn, represented by audit manager Yusufu Bruce.
According to prosecutor Audrah Chitoro, the incident unfolded on December 28 of last year. Gonese, who had been entrusted with a float of US$3,420 to serve customers, failed to manage the funds responsibly.
Instead, he turned to online betting, attempting to win more money in hopes of impressing his new wife.
The day after the theft, at around 3 a.m., Gonese contacted Bruce to confess that he had lost US$470 in cash and US$2,950 in InnBucks deposits due to his gambling activities.
Following his confession, Bruce conducted a reconciliation at the outlet, which confirmed that the entire sum of US$3,420 had been misappropriated.
Despite Gonese’s admission, no money was recovered. A police report was subsequently filed, leading to his arrest. As the court case continues, sentencing is scheduled to take place on Friday.
