Isheunesu Moyo, a 30-year-old man from Madhuve Village in Mberengwa, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being charged with culpable homicide in a tragic incident that occurred on May 23, 2021.
Moyo was operating his Toyota Funcargo as a private taxi when he picked up a passenger who was heading to the number 1 bus stop along the Zvishavane-Mbalabala road.
After agreeing on a fare of USD 90, a disagreement ensued when the passenger refused to pay upon reaching his destination.
Instead of letting the matter resolve peacefully, Moyo drove to the taxi pickup point on Goddard Road near the Pick and Pay Supermarket in Zvishavane, where he rallied a group of associates to assist in recovering the fare.
During the confrontation that followed, a physical altercation broke out, leading to the passenger attempting to flee from the escalating situation.
In a moment of desperation, Moyo threw a stone, striking the passenger on the back of the head, causing him to lose his balance and subsequently fall onto the road.
Tragically, he was then struck by an oncoming Columbia Freight liner truck, resulting in his de@th.
Emergency responders transported the victim to Zvishavane District Hospital, where he was pronounced de@d upon arrival.
After consideration of the circumstances surrounding the case, the court sentenced Isheunesu Moyo to seven years of imprisonment, with two years suspended for a period of five years, meaning he will serve an effective five years behind bars.
