In a significant development within the ongoing trial regarding the alleged embezzlement of approximately US$4 million from Getbucks Microfinance Bank, one of the bank’s employees, Gillian Nyengere has been acquitted. This decision came at the close of the state’s case, marking a crucial turn in the legal proceedings involving four accused individuals.
The accused individuals—Mozisi Machesu, Tafadzwa Sandi, Kuzivakwashe Mudzingwa, and Gillian Nyengere—were facing charges related to their alleged involvement in a scheme that purportedly led to the misappropriation of funds from the bank between October 2020 and August 2021.
The state presented evidence suggesting that Nyengere, along with the other accused, initiated transactions from various accounts within the bank. These transactions were allegedly moved to individual accounts associated with accomplices, including Rutendo Mariwo and Nyangu Chiratidzo Mariwo.
Subsequently, Machesu purportedly authorized these transactions, leading to the redirection of funds into accounts linked to the accused individuals for withdrawal and division among the group.
At a crucial juncture in the trial, the court acquitted Nyengere at the end of the state’s case. This decision, while signalling a significant development, leaves the remaining accused—Machesu, Sandi, and Mudzingwa—still facing charges related to the alleged embezzlement case.
The case has attracted widespread attention due to the substantial sums involved and its impact on the financial institution. Nyengere’s acquittal introduces a new dimension to the trial, prompting increased scrutiny of the evidence against the remaining accused individuals.
As the trial progresses, the focus remains on the courtroom proceedings, with a keen interest in unravelling the intricate details surrounding the alleged embezzlement and determining the potential culpability of the remaining accused in the GetBucks US$4 million embezzlement.
