A somber mood has enveloped the Concession area in Mashonaland Central following the tragic d3ath of 23-year-old Blessmore Gwatidzo, who lost his life while extracting pitsand.
The incident occurred on October 10, when Gwatidzo and his colleague, David Sauti, were illegally poaching sand in the Concession cross area.
As they were digging, the pit unexpectedly collapsed, trapping both men inside.
Gwatidzo was completely buried and unfortunately d!ed on the spot, while Sauti managed to get his head above the sand, allowing him to call for help.
Quick-thinking transportation operator Bigboy Kanyemba, who was assisting the duo, heard Sauti’s desperate cries and rushed to the scene, aiding in his rescue.
Sauti was subsequently taken to the hospital to receive medical attention for the trauma he experienced during the ordeal.
Meanwhile, Gwatidzo’s lifeless body was transported to the Concession mortuary, where it was placed for safekeeping until further arrangements could be made.
The risks associated with illegal sand mining have been highlighted by this tragedy, sparking conversations about the safety and legality of such practices.
Local authorities are now faced with the challenge of addressing the dangers of such activities while trying to enforce regulations.
