Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Kazembe Kazembe has delivered a stark warning to police officers as Zimbabwe prepares for the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance in ensuring road safety.
Speaking at the launch of a road safety awareness campaign on 7 August 2024, he highlighted the significant increase in travel during the holidays, which often correlates with a rise in road accidents.
To combat this, he urged thorough checks of all buses before departure, ensuring they possess the necessary documentation and are not overloaded, recognizing the role that such factors play in traffic incidents.
Furthermore, Minister Kazembe directed Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga to enforce accountability within the police force itself, addressing systemic issues of corruption linked to roadblocks and vehicle inspections.
He underscored that any buses involved in accidents after passing through checkpoints would prompt a thorough investigation of the responsible officers, holding them accountable for any negligence or misconduct.
