Zimbabwe’s second Vice President Hon. Kembo Mohadi has officially commissioned the Garanyemba Livestock Drought Mitigation Centre in Gwanda, Matebeleland south Province.
The commissioning ceremony of the Garanyemba Livestock Drought Mitigation Centre was held today, 10th of July and the event was attended by senior government officials including the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Dr Anxious Masuka.
The Livestock Drought Mitigation Centre was built in Garanyemba Ward. The ward was selected to pilot the programme which will replicated in all rural wards across the country to protect communities against the effects of the El Nino
The government target to establish the drought mitigation centres in all rural wards. All the drought mitigation centres will have solar powered boreholes, nutrition gardens, livestock feeding troughs, livestock water troughs, supplementary feeding troughs and livestock sales centres
The Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Dr Masuka said the centres will be used as livestock sales centres and they will control the sale of livestock.
“No farmer will be allowed to sell an animal from their kraal while buyers will be expected to purchase cattle from stipulated points on organised dates,” he said
“This will help government to control the market price in order to protect farmers from being robbed by cattle buyers,” Minister added
