The people of Sudan continue to face horrific vi0lence and the threat of famine, UN humanitarians warned on Friday (07 June), echoing the UN Secretary-General’s criticism of an @ttack on a community south of Khartoum that reportedly k!lled more than 100 people.
On Wednesday, Mohamed Refaat, the UN migration agency’s (IOM) chief of mission in Sudan, briefed journalists in Geneva from Port Sudan, citing “truly horrifying reports of violent @ttacks and casualties” in the village of Wad Al-Noura in Aj Jazirah state.
The RSF reportedly carried out the strike, which k!lled over 100 people, including at least 35 children, prompting criticism from UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UNICEF Director Catherine Russell.
Another flashpoint in the conflict is the city of North Darfur, El Fasher, in Sudan’s west, where about 800,000 civilians are still in d@nger due to increasing combat between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the opposition Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Mr. Refaat stated that the place is “inaccessible” to the UN, both cross-live and cross-border. He urged all parties to allow unhindered humanitarian access to the area “via all available routes” and emphasized that water and fuel costs had “skyrocketed,” making essentials unaffordable.
