Talent Priveledge Sibanda, a 27-year-old woman from Madhuve Village in Mberengwa, has been convicted of infanticide and sentenced to 36 months in prison, with 10 months suspended for a period of five years due to good behavior.
The tragic incident occurred in October 2024, following a tumultuous relationship in which Sibanda separated from her husband in June 2023 but later reconciled while pr3gnant with another man’s child.
On the evening of October 27, she gave birth to a baby girl in solitude, a situation that led to her making a harrowing decision to strangle the newborn.
After committing the act, she buried the infant in a pit located just a few meters from her home in an attempt to conceal her actions.
The case unraveled when her niece noticed that Sibanda had suddenly ceased to show signs of pr3gnancy, prompting her to report the situation to the authorities.
Subsequently, police launched an investigation, leading to Sibanda’s arrest after she confessed and revealed the location of the baby’s b_rial.
The emotional and psychological motivations behind her actions were not disclosed in detail during the proceedings, leaving many questions understandably unanswered.
The court’s decision reflected both the severity of her crime and the complexities surrounding mental health and societal pressures faced by women in similar circumstances.
Sibanda is now set to serve 26 months in prison, with the suspended sentence offering some hope that she may be able to rehabilitate her behavior in the future.
