Former Zimbabwe national football team captain, Benjani Mwaruwari, has embarked on a promising new chapter in his coaching career by securing a position in England.
Mwaruwari has taken a significant step towards his return to coaching by joining the coaching staff of English Championship side, Plymouth Argyle’s junior team.
Following a thorough selection process,he emerged as the preferred candidate for the role. The ex-Manchester City striker has already spent four months working with Argyle’s Under 13s to 18s age groups.
This new role follows as a brief stint in coaching for Mwaruwari, who previously held a contract with Ngezi Platinum Stars in 2022 for four-years.However,his term was cut short due to the team’s performance, which fell short of expectations.
Under his watch, Ngezi played 13 matches, won three, drew six and lost four. As a result, Ngezi slipped out of contention for the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title, leading the club to severe ties with the former Portsmouth and Blackburn Rovers star.
Following this setback, Mwaruwari decided to return to England to further refine his coaching abilities at the grassroots level.
Speaking about Mwaruwari’s recruitment, Plymouth Argyle academy manager Phil Stokes expressed the club’s intentions to assist him in developing his coaching skills and potentially integrating him into the club’s structures.
“So Benjani started earlier this season as part of players to coaches scheme. It is an initiative of the Professional Footballers Association, the Premier League and the English Football League,” Stokes said.
