The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), led by Douglas Mwonzora, is facing accusations of not paying its employees for the past eight months.
An anonymous source revealed to source that MDC workers are also concerned about the mishandling of rental funds.
Mwonzora, the MDC leader, was compelled to attend a crisis meeting with disgruntled workers on Friday. The source also disclosed that some workers are contemplating pushing for Mwonzora’s removal as the party leader.
When source visited the party’s Harare headquarters, Mwonzora was in a meeting.
“The party has not paid us for the past eight months and the employees have resorted to confront the party. Right now Mwonzora is in the building and he is in a meeting with the other workers. The party leadership has been collecting funds from rentals and all this money is being used without accountability,” said the source.
According to the source, the original plan involved taking over the Morgan Tsvangirai house to compel Mwonzora and the National Council into a meeting. Journalists attempting to investigate the matter were denied entry to the headquarters.
When questioned about the allegations, MDC’s Director of Information, Chengetai Guta, neither confirmed nor denied the claims, describing the issue as an internal matter. Guta stated,
“That is an internal issue. We do not discuss human resource issues in the public domain. So whatever you allege remains an allegation. We are yet to hear more from you if at all you have anything. But like I have said human resource issues are not issues of public concern this is an internal issue and one that will be resolved internally if at all there is anything like that.”
According to General Notice 125A of 2022 published in the Government Gazette, the MDC received ZW$149,850,000 in February last year. This amount was approximately US$800,000 using the parallel market rate at that time or US$1 million based on the official interbank market rate.
