Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Jonasi, a recent finalist on America’s Got Talent (AGT), shared his deeply personal story of familial rejection during an interview on DJ Ollah 7’s YouTube podcast.
Now back in Zimbabwe after his impressive performance in the AGT finals, Jonasi was the featured performer at the 2024 Shoko Festival, where he captivated audiences with both his humor and heartfelt narrative.
In a candid moment, Jonasi recounted how his father shunned him even before he was born. He revealed that his father, residing in Mutare, outright rejected the idea of having him.
This painful experience was compounded by the disrespectful behavior of his father and his family towards Jonasi’s grandparents, who had ardently sought acceptance for their soon-to-be grandson.
Despite the heartache, Jonasi’s grandfather, Mr. Manyenyeka, stepped in to claim ownership of his upbringing, pledging to care for him as his own.
Jonasi described his grandfather as a pivotal figure in his life, expressing gratitude for the love and support he received. He recounted how, unlike his father, his grandfather embraced him fully, vowing to provide for him in every way—sharing meals and shelter.
In an act of defiance and identity formation, Jonasi dissociated from his father’s family and chose to adopt his grandfather’s surname, Mwanyenyeka, reflecting his loyalty and commitment to the man who truly raised him.
As a child growing up in Chimanimani, Jonasi also shared the profound impact his grandfather had on his journey into comedy.
He recalled fond memories of watching comedy shows together, where he found inspiration. His grandfather’s laughter ignited a spark within him, leading Jonasi to aspire to evoke similar joy in others. He began to develop his comedic skills by mimicking performances, driven by a desire to create laughter and happiness.
Now looking back, Jonasi holds no resentment towards his father for the rejection he faced. Instead, he views his challenging beginnings as integral to his growth, believing that everything happens for a reason.
The struggles he faced have shaped him into the comedian he is today, allowing him to connect with audiences through his art.
