Mariah Carey’s mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, died on the same day this weekend. The multi-Grammy-winning artist revealed the tragic news in a statement to People.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.
“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” added the 55 year old singer
“I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my , privacy during this impossible time.”
Mariah’s mother (87) was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and voice instructor before marrying Alfred Roy Carey. Her parents split when she was three years old. She has a younger brother, Morgan.
Fans all over the world have posted messages of encouragement for the artist online.
@BeeTheeHottie wrote on X, “Praying for Mariah Carey and her family. Losing a mother is difficult, but losing a sister simultaneously is unfathomable. @visionofbliss said: “Mariah Carey is an incredibly strong and resilient woman. I pray her faith provides her with comfort.”
In her statement, Carey did not disclose the causes of her mother and sister’s de@th.
Carey’s mom, Patricia, was an opera singer and sang with her daughter on several occasions. They had a complicated relationship.
In her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey”, the singer said: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s a never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.
“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment.”
