A commuter omnibus driver, Takudzwa Chipere, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for fat@lly running over a pedestrian in Harare.
Provincial Magistrate Ntombizodwa Sibanda found Chipere guilty of vi0lating the Road Traffic Act and suspended six months of his sentence on the condition of good behavior.
As a result, Chipere will serve an effective 18 months in prison. Additionally, his driver’s license has been revoked, and he is banned from driving for two years.
The 26-year-old Chipere, a resident of Murisa village in Chitungwiza, pleaded guilty to the charges, accepting responsibility for his negligent actions.
Prosecutor Charlotte Gomani told the court that on April 2 this year, Chipere, who was driving a Nissan caravan along Seke Road, with 14 passengers on board reversed the vehicle and knocked down Mike Moyo.
Gomani said the vehicle dragged Moyo who was trapped underneath for nearly a metre before it stopped.
Moyo was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment.
He, however, succumbed to his !njuries on April 6 this year.
