The National Health Laboratory Service in South Africa has been struck by a severe cyber att@ck which resulted in compromise of its systems and infrastructure.
Speaking in an interview, the NHLS CEO, Professor Koleka Mlisana confirmed the attack highlighting how they could not acsess laboratory information, employees emails, several applications etc.
According to CEO Mlisana, the NHLS is the country’s diagnostic pathology service for public healthcare facilities and the att@ck put a strain on the system.
The NHLS also comprises a network of two hundred and sixty-five laboratories in South Africa and the services it provides have been allegedly halted since they are focusing on a recovery plan.
“From the IT perspective, we have to come up with a recovery plan… we need to ensure a layer of security to avoid any further attempts of att@ck”, she stated.
Laboratory services have since been suspended which means citizens can not be provided their laboratory results as they have resorted to manual complicated methods.
