A startling incident occurred at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, when a man pretending to be a doctor was arrested for treating patients.
Prosper Mpofu wore a white coat and stethoscope, fooling hospital staff until his act was discovered.
The trouble began when a patient noticed that a prescription didn’t match their diagnosis.
This raised suspicions, prompting the hospital to investigate, which led to Mpofu’s arrest. Thabani Ndlovu, a patient who encountered him, shared that a friend from church had recommended the fake doctor for his wife, who has a heart condition.

Initially, they saw a real doctor, but later Mpofu took them into a consultation room. That’s where hospital authorities caught him. It turned out his prescriptions were full of mistakes, like wrong dosages and misspelled medication names.
Hospital officials confirmed that Mpofu had been pretending to be a doctor for some time, managing to blend in until his odd behavior raised red flags. This incident has sparked concerns about hospital security and the need for better checks on medical staff.
The hospital promised to improve safety measures and ensure patients’ well-being. “We are cooperating with authorities to bring justice,” a spokesperson said.
The police encouraged anyone who met Mpofu to report any suspicious activity. “This highlights the need for vigilance in healthcare,” said a police spokesperson who spoke to ZBC.
