Tragedy struck in the Brazilian state of São Paulo when a plane carrying 61 people crashed in the town of Vinhedo, resulting in no survivors.
According to BBC, the twin-engine turboprop, operated by Voepass airline, was en route from Cascavel to Guarulhos airport in São Paulo city when it spiralled out of control and descended vertically into a residential area.
Miraculously, no one on the ground was injur3d, although one home was damaged.
The plane, an ATR 72-500, was carrying 57 passengers and four crew members.
Footage shared on social media captured the harrowing moment of the crash. Authorities have retrieved the flight recorders and launched an investigation, with the plane’s manufacturer, ATR, cooperating fully.
Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and São Paulo’s Governor, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, expressed their condolences and declared three days of mourning, respectively.
The civil aviation agency confirmed that the plane was in good condition and the crew members were properly licensed.
Among the victims were two trainee doctors from the Uopeccan Cancer Hospital in Cascavel, who were on board.
The crash has left a trail of devastation, and authorities are working to determine the cause of the tragic accident.
