The Zimbabwe Republic Police in Kwekwe has launched an investigation into a suspected kidn@pping case involving a 22-year-old woman who lost her one-week-old baby to a stranger on Wednesday.
The distressing incident occurred as the victim, Rumbidzai Gunhu, was returning home from Kwekwe District Hospital following a post-natal check-up.
According to Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, Gunhu, who resides in Mbizo, was approached by an unknown woman who offered to assist her by carrying the infant.
“After leaving the post-natal care unit, Gunhu encountered an unidentified woman who volunteered to accompany her home and help by carrying the baby,” Mahoko said.
It was reported that along the way, the suspect stopped and handed Gunhu a ZW$20 note, instructing her to buy freezits at a nearby shop.
“When Gunhu returned a few minutes later, the woman and the baby were nowhere to be found,” Mahoko explained.
Gunhu searched the area desperately but was unable to locate the suspect or her baby. She later reported the incident to the police.
The case has sparked widespread concern about the safety of women and children, especially in public spaces. Authorities are urging parents to remain vigilant and cautious when accepting assistance from strangers.
The Kwekwe community has been left in shock, with many praying for the safe recovery of the infant.
