The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of Anesu Tauya Maponga in connection with a fraud case that occurred in Chegutu between April 2024 and June 2024.
The suspect, who claimed to be a police officer, targeted an unsuspecting victim whose husband was remanded in custody for a robbery case.
The suspect promised to facilitate the release of the victim’s husband by paying prosecutors, magistrates, and court officials, but only if the victim paid a fee of $1500.
The suspect demanded a down payment of $700, claiming he would give it to his friend, a magistrate, to initiate the release process. The victim was duped out of $470.

On June 3, 2024, detectives from the CID’s Police Internal Investigation acted on received information and arrested Maponga in Chegutu CBD following a trap. The suspect received $50 in the trap, which led to his arrest.
