In a shocking incident that underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement, a police officer was hijacked and r0bbed after being hired by two suspects, Luckmore Tasaruka (26) and Tatenda Saidi (30), to drive them to Mhondoro.
The Harare magistrate, Fadzai Mthombeni, denied bail to the duo, who are now facing r0bbery charges and must appear in court again on October 30.
The incident occurred on July 26, 2023, around 6:30 p.m., when the suspects asked the officer to stop the vehicle under the pretense of needing a break.
Once the officer complied, they swiftly overpowered him, tying a rope around his neck and gagging him to facilitate their r0bbery.
They proceeded to take his wallet, which contained US$68, as well as his driver’s license and national identity card.
Subsequently, one of the suspects assumed control of the Toyota Raum, driving away with the officer still trapped inside, before ultimately dumping him along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.
Disturbingly, the officer’s police uniform was left abandoned within the stolen vehicle, emphasizing the audacity of the crime and the potential risks officers face in the line of duty.
