In response to a viral video showing children begging for money near Joina City in Harare’s Central Business District, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), alongside the Department of Social Welfare, conducted a operation on August 23 2024.
This initiative aims to address the troubling presence of children and their guardians engaging in begging along key areas such as Rezende Street, Joina City, and the Town House vicinity.
During the operation, authorities successfully removed a total of 22 children and their guardians from the streets.
The police emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable populations, particularly children, and stressed that exploiting them for begging purposes is illegal under national laws.
Guardians are cautioned against using children and individuals with disabilities for such activities, as they face the risk of arrest and legal consequences.
Moving forward, the police and other relevant authorities aim to create a safer environment for children, ensuring they are not subjected to the dangers of street life.
