Police in Mashonaland East have impounded 348 vehicles, predominantly Honda Fit models, often utilised in the illicit transport service referred to as mushikashika.
Assistant Commissioner Ezekiel Munengerwa expressed concerns that these vehicles are increasingly associated with various criminal activities, including robberies and stock th3ft, thereby raising alarms about public safety.
The operation is part of a broader national initiative to address issues related to unregistered vehicles, those lacking number plates, and the proliferation of illegal taxis.
During the crackdown, authorities arrested several drivers, many of whom were found operating without the necessary licenses.
Munengerwa strongly discouraged the public from using mushikashika, citing their lack of registration and insurance as critical factors that compromise safety.
He reaffirmed that the police’s efforts to restore order on the roads would persist until illegal operations are thoroughly dismantled.
The Assistant Commissioner also urged law enforcement officers to uphold integrity and provide honest service, as he condemned the existence of corruption within the police force.
The operation reflects a renewed commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens and the efficiency of public transport systems.
With ongoing concerns about public safety and unlawful activities, police are keen to reinforce the message that adherence to traffic regulations is imperative for community well-being.
