The duo had been on the run and wanted for a series of armed robberies, making them highly sought-after targets for law enforcement.
The law enforcement authorities, following a series of leads, managed to track down the wanted criminals to a hideout in a Chitungwiza residence.
However, when detectives closed in on the location, Chimuti and Mutungira refused to surrender and instead, opened fire on the officers.
The situation quickly escalated into a shootout that left the criminals fatally wounded.
“They were shot and died from their injuries at the scene,” a police source in Seke said.
Criminal History and Stolen Firearms
Mugove Chimuti, 33, and Ishmael Mutungira, 28, were no strangers to criminal activities. They had a long history with the police and had previously faced charges related to 23 counts of armed robbery dating back to 2017.
Over the years, they had been in and out of jail for various offenses, demonstrating a pattern of dangerous criminal behavior.
The two suspects were once accused of robbing a mine in Chegutu and raping a police officer.
During the search of the Chitungwiza hideout, the police uncovered two rifles and two revolvers.
The police had been seeking to apprehend Chimuti and Mutungira for their involvement in several armed robbery cases reported in different areas, including Chinhoyi, Beatrice, Harare, and Norton.
ZimLive reports that they tried reaching out to Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi for an official statement. However, at the time of the inquiries, Commissioner Nyathi was engaged in meetings and unavailable for comment.
