Portugal international defender Pepe has announced his retirement from football. Pepe retires at the age of 41, having become the oldest player to appear in the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship this summer.
The Portugal legend played 878 games, won 34 trophies, and was recognized as one of the best defenders of his generation.
He won Euro 2016 with Portugal and also helped secure three Champions League titles and three La Liga titles during his 10-year spell at Real Madrid. The former Real Madrid center-back made 141 appearances for his country.
Pepe’s retirement from football has significant meaning for his former Real Madrid and Portugal teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently plays for a Saudi Pro League side.
Via his Instagram, Cristiano Ronaldo said there are “no words to express” what Pepe means to him.
“We won everything there was to win on the pitch, but the biggest triumph is the friendship and the respect I have for you. You’re unique, my brother.
“Thank you for so much,” Ronaldo added.
