A dramatic and intense situation unfolded in Lusaka’s Matero Local Court, where 32-year-old Elesi Sakala was fined for unleashing a torrent of insults and physical attacks on her husband and neighbor, Zelesi Phiri.
Sakala, who’s pregnant and a member of the New Apostolic Church, suspected Phiri of having an affair with her husband.
What’s even more intriguing is that Sakala and Phiri have a history – they were once sisters-in-law, as Sakala was previously married to Phiri’s brother.
The incident began when Sakala publicly humiliated her husband, pouring water on him while he was socialising with friends, and then physically ass@ulting him.
She also hurled insults at Phiri, accusing her of being HIV positive and bewitched to remain single. Sakala’s verbal attacks persisted for three days and nights, leaving Phiri shaken.
In her defense, Sakala claimed her actions were a response to her husband’s neglect during her pregnancy, which she believed was due to his infidelity.
However, Magistrate Harriet Mulenga ruled in favor of Phiri, ordering Sakala to pay K1,000 in compensation for defamation.
The magistrate questioned Sakala’s behavior, highlighting the disrespect shown to her husband, who was publicly insulted and beaten.
This case sheds light on the complexities of relationships and the devastating consequences of infidelity.
Research suggests that men are more likely to engage in s3xual infidelity, while women are more likely to have emotional affairs.
The motivations behind infidelity can be varied, including feelings of neglect, boredom, or a desire for connection outside the relationship
