Finance Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube, recently received the Best African Finance Minister of the Year award in London yesterday, and Zimbos are seething.
Prof Ncube received the recognition at the Global Reputation Forum in Westminster, England. He was also named among 100 Most Reputable People at the two-day Global Reputation Forum, Reputable Bank and Fintech Awards.
The Herald reports that he was awarded for steering the country’s economy to over three percent growth despite challenges from the Covid-19 pandemic. Zimbabwe’s resilience and effective use of resources in combating the virus were highlighted.
Reputation Poll International acknowledged the Government for its economic achievements, presenting the award to Prof Ncube during the two-day event.
Lord John Waverly, the chairman, said:
“In today’s rapidly evolving financial landscape, the convergence of technology and banking has given rise to a new era of financial management challenges and the Zimbabwean Minister, with a shoe-string budget, managed to fight the Covid-19 pandemic with the Government and country recording minimal Covid-19-related human deaths.”
Prof Ncube emphasised Zimbabwe’s economic progress and improved infrastructure under the Second Republic, even amid economic sanctions. He mentioned presenting a 2024 Budget proposal aimed at further economic improvement. The Finance Minister expressed delight at the recognition and highlighted the Treasury team’s efforts in implementing effective economic policies.
