R&B singer R. Kelly’s attorneys have filed an urgent motion seeking his release from federal prison, citing a purported plot to have him murdered behind bars. The legal team claims Kelly’s life is in immediate danger and requests he be moved to home detention.
According to court documents, three officials from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons allegedly approached an inmate with a proposal to assassinate Kelly in exchange for freedom. The claim comes via a sworn affidavit from Mikeal Glenn Stine, a terminally ill inmate and Aryan Brotherhood member.
The motion argues that Kelly’s continued incarceration under these circumstances constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. Stine alleges he was approached by prison officials to carry out the murder but refused and instead warned Kelly.
This isn’t Kelly’s first claim of unsafe prison conditions. In 2020, he was assaulted in his cell while awaiting trial. His lawyers now warn that the latest revelations are more disturbing and time is running out.
Kelly is serving concurrent 30- and 20-year prison sentences at the Butner Medium I federal facility in North Carolina. His lawyers are pushing for his release, citing the alleged plot and concerns for his safety.
