Harare City Health Services Director, Prosper Chonzi, has issued a warning to residents to seek medical attention promptly if they experience flu-like symptoms following an outbreak of influenza in the city.
The outbreak has been reported to be widespread, with many cases of influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) being recorded in various parts of the city.
In a statement, Chonzi urged residents to take immediate action if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, and fatigue.
He emphasised that prompt medical attention is crucial to prevent complications and reduce the risk of hospitalization.
“We are urging residents to seek medical attention immediately if they experience any of these symptoms,” Chonzi said. “Influenza is a highly contagious disease that can spread quickly, especially among vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and people with underlying health conditions.”
Chonzi attributed the outbreak to the ongoing winter season, which has led to increased circulation of the virus.
He urged residents to take precautions to prevent the spread of the disease, including frequent handwashing, covering their mouths when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact with others who are sick.
The Harare City Health Services has also set up emergency clinics in several parts of the city to provide treatment and testing for individuals who may be infected with the virus. Chonzi encouraged residents to visit these clinics for prompt medical attention and testing.
Residents are also advised to stay informed about the outbreak through regular updates from local health authorities and to follow recommended precautions to prevent the spread of the disease.
