Armed robbers pounced on the Roman Catholic Church in Emakhandeni suburb and got away with household appliances before stripping the church’s closed circuit television (CCTV) last Friday night.
This is the second time that the church has been targeted by thieves.Last November, robbers got away with an undisclosed amount of cash and assaulted the priest and his brother.
Two other Roman Catholic churches in Mpopoma and Pumula East suburbs had been targeted in the same week in a string of robberies that shocked the church’s worshippers.
“Last year the robbers gained entry into the priest’s house, situated in the church premises, after breaking down the door with an axe.
“They demanded keys to a safe, to which the priest, Father Elias Musoni, told them that the church did not have a safe. Father Musoni and his brother were assaulted during their robbery.
“In the latest robbery they got away with electrical appliances and destroyed the CCTV,” said a police source.
Father Musoni confirmed the latest robbery and said that a police report had been filed.
In the robbery that took place last year in Mpopoma, two priests woke up to the sound of a door being broken down.
The two church leaders sounded the alarm by shouting for help from neighbours.
In Pumula East, robbers attacked a Roman Catholic Church and reportedly walked away empty-handed after breaking down the church door.
No one was injured during the robbery.
