Apostolic Faith Mission Church in Zimbabwe (AFM) – run Rufaro High School near Chatsworth in Gutu is this year’s overall winner of the National Clean Competition Award.
Thousands of people attended the prize handover ceremony held at Rufaro on Friday last week where the guest of honour was First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa.
She was accompanied by a high-powered delegation of the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Torerayi Moyo and then Minister Environment, Climate and Wildlife Mangaliso Ndlovu.
The first runner-up in the secondary schools category is John Tallach High of Ntabaziduna and Ruya Adventist High of Mt Darwin is the third runner-up.
In the primary schools category, St Paul’s Primary from the Midlands Province is the overall winner and Madyangove primary of Chivi and Hurungwe Primary of Murehwa are on second and third places respectively
Rufaro High walked away with a 3kv solar kit, 80 litre bin, club hamper, a certificate, and a science and innovation trophy in the competitions sponsored by Eversharp 15M and the Environmental Management Authority (EMA)
John Tallach High School got a 120 l bin, club hamper, a desktop computer, and a certificate while Ruya Adventist received a 120 litre bin, club hamper and a certificate.
St Paul’s Primary School received a 3kv solar kit, club hamper, 80l bin, and a certificate. Madyangove received a 3kv solar kit, club hamper, and a certificate while Hurungwe Primary got a club hamper, 120 litre bin and a certificate.
The projects that saw Rufaro winning the grand award are fish ponds, a herbal garden, beekeeping project, waste recycling, waste separation and the environmental club.
“I stand before you to applaud the achievement of our students, recognize the dedication of school staff and at the same time express my gratitude to our esteemed partners.
“May these competitions continue to ignite a passion for environment responsibility across the entire nation.
“The strong partnership among EMA, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and Eversharp 15 M has been instrumental in making this a success,” said Mnangagwa.
Mnangagwa urged all schools to take part in waste management and to have Environment Clubs.
“I urge all schools to draw inspiration from these champions to nurture their environmental clubs and join the fight for a healthier world,” she said.
She donated 6000 reusable pads to Masvingo Province Education Director Shylatte Mhike and the First Lady pledged to establish a Piggery project at Rufaro high.
The previous Champions on the National Clean Schools Competitions are Pumula high in Bulawayo and Mountbatten primary in Harare.
