The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has joined the government and the people of the Republic of Malawi in celebrating 60 years of independence.
On July 6th, 1964, the Malawians achieved freedom after 80 years of British colonial rule.
According to SADC Secretariat’s X post, newsreportzim.com has learned that, today, 6th of July, Malawi has turned 60 years of independence and the SADC family joined the commemoration.
SADC wrote the following:
“Today, 6th July, 2024, the SADC family joins the Government and the people of the Republic of Malawi, a Member State of SADC, in celebrating 60 years of independence.”
“Independence Day, also known as Republic Day, in Malawi is celebrated on July 6th, commemorating events in 1964 when Malawians achieved freedom after 80 years of British colonial rule.”
“Due to unrest in the country, the people of Malawi were given the chance to vote in 1993, and overwhelmingly voted in favor of a multi-party democracy.
The first free and fair elections were held in May of 1994.
Though there has been some political strife in the years following, Malawi remains a free democracy where people have the ability to vote, to work for their own interests, and to provide for their families.”
“Malawi is a founding member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and joined the regional bloc at its formation as the Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC) in Lusaka, Zambia, in April 1980.
On 17th of August 1992, at a Summit held in Windhoek, Republic of Namibia, the Heads of State and Government signed the SADC Declaration and Treaty that effectively transformed the Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC) into the Southern African Development Community (SADC).”
