A dramatic rescue operation unfolded yesterday in Johannesburg as the South African Police Service (SAPS) anti-kidnapping task team, in collaboration with private security partners, apprehended a significant group of criminals involved in the abduction of a Zimbabwean businessman.
This high-stakes operation culminated in the arrest of 14 individuals spread across various locations in the city.
Among the apprehended were three Chinese nationals and two Mozambicans, highlighting the international scope of the criminal network. According to Athlenda Mathe, the national police spokesperson, the breakthrough came when the task team successfully located the victim in Diepkloof, Soweto, ensuring his safe recovery.
“The investigation led us to an apartment in Greenstone Park where we detained the first eight suspects,” Mathe disclosed during a press briefing. “Simultaneously, additional suspects were apprehended in Sandton, bringing the total number to 14.”

During the raids, law enforcement seized critical evidence implicating the kidnappers in their nefarious activities. This included multiple speed point machines used for financial transactions, a substantial amount of cash withdrawn from the victim’s bank account, and two firearms. Notably, one firearm had been reported stolen during a house robbery in Linden the previous year.
Mathe emphasized the broader implications of these arrests, highlighting SAPS’s recent successes against kidnapping syndicates preying on businessmen for ransom. “In recent weeks, we’ve intensified efforts to dismantle these syndicates,” she affirmed. “This operation marks a significant victory in our ongoing battle against organized crime.”
The plight of the Zimbabwean businessman revealed the serious threat posed by such criminal enterprises operating within South Africa. Authorities have vowed to continue their crackdown on kidnapping networks, seeking to safeguard the lives and businesses of residents and visitors alike.
