South Africa’s 2024 national and provincial elections were marked by significant logistical challenges, including long queues and inadequate staffing, leading to many voters being unable to cast their ballots despite waiting for hours.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) faced criticism for underestimating voter turnout and failing to adequately prepare for the election.
Despite these challenges, the IEC announced that all voters in line by closing time would be allowed to vote. The first results showed the African National Congress (ANC) leading, with the Eastern Cape being the first province to officially release results.
The elections are pivotal as they could see the ruling ANC party lose its majority, with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and other parties also making gains.
