SDA Church Confirms Minister Sanyatwe’s Apology After Politically Charged Remarks

The Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church has confirmed that Sports Minister Anselem Sanyatwe apologized for making partisan comments during a recent religious event in Nyanga, Manicaland. Sanyatwe had declared that Zanu-PF would rule “until donkeys grow horns,” sparking public outrage and backlash from church members and the wider public.

In a formal statement, Zibusiso Trust Ndlovu, Executive Secretary of the Zimbabwe East Union Conference (ZEUC), reaffirmed the church’s strict apolitical stance and distanced the organization from Sanyatwe’s remarks. Ndlovu emphasized that the church’s pulpit must never be used for political advocacy, endorsements, or commentary, citing the Church Manual.

Ndlovu quoted John 18:36, “My kingdom is not of this world,” to emphasize the church’s allegiance to Christ and its commitment to neutrality. He urged SDA leaders, members, and invited guests to uphold the sanctity and neutrality of church platforms.

The SDA Church’s public rebuke of a high-ranking government official has drawn praise for reaffirming its independence and religious integrity. The church’s stance serves as a reminder of the importance of separating politics from religious platforms.

Sanyatwe’s comments reignited concerns about the politicization of churches in Zimbabwe, particularly by ruling party elites during public or philanthropic events. The incident highlights the need for church leaders and members to maintain their neutrality and uphold the values of their faith.
