A second individual died from hypothermia after becoming stuck in the snow on the N3 between Estcourt and Harrismith on Sunday.
Rescue and recovery activities resumed, with hopes to restore some roads, despite the Gift of the Givers withdrawing humanitarian aid earlier.
The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) had shut down the R74 highway between Van Reenen’s and Oliviershoek Passes.
Authorities warned of limited visibility owing to the disruptive weather at the time, but operations proceeded “under extremely challenging conditions.”
“Please avoid travel between Tugela Plaza and Harrismith until further notice,” stated N3TC.
The N3TC issued a late bulletin on Sunday, stating that circumstances were overcast along the N3 toll route from Cedara Interchange 96 to Heidelberg Interchange 59 and cautioning motorists to drive safely.
Briefly News has subsequently inquired with KZN police and the Gift of the Givers for more information regarding the deceased. D
Gift of the Givers founder Dr Imtiaz Sooliman confirmed the de@th, while provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda did not respond.
